เดิมเกาะสมุยมีชื่อเสียงในฐานะเป็นแหล่งปลูกมะพร้าว ปัจจุบันเป็นสถานที่พักผ่อนตากอากาศที่ชาวต่างประเทศนิยมเดินทางมาท่องเที่ยว มีร้านค้า โรงแรม และสถานบันเทิงต่าง ๆ มากมาย หาดที่เป็นที่เชิดหน้าชูตาของคนเกาะสมุย คือ หาดเฉวง บริเวณชายหาดยาวประมาณ 7 กิโลเมตร ถ้าได้ลงมือเดินตั้งแต่ต้นหาดจนกระทั่งถึงปลายหาดจะใช้เวลาประมาณถึง 2 ชั่วโมง เพราะการเดินบนผืนทรายไม่เหมือนการเดินบนพื้นดินปรกติ หาดที่มีความสวยงามเป็นอันดับรองลงมา คือ หาดละไม หาดเชิงมนต์ แหลมโจรคร่ำ หาดท้องยาง หาดหน้าทอน หาดพังกา และหาดตลิ่งงาม
